042926 Evening — Gratitude

April is drawing to a close, and the season of fine drizzle is about to give way to days of full heat. At this turn from late spring into early summer, Lifestream has also received some heartening news.

The association has not yet completed a single year since it was formally founded, and already the Lifestream way of relaxation has begun to take root in Taiwan's major cities. Teaching relaxation truly is not difficult — it is a resonance of state rather than a transmission of technique. Anyone who has learned relaxation can become one of our relaxation guides, as long as they are relaxed enough; years of training are not even necessary.

The real difficulty lies in having compassion for the world that outweighs every emotion and every arrangement — being willing to risk being misunderstood, to step outside the comfort of an ordinary life, and to devote oneself to resolving others' confusion through relaxation.

Lately I have heard companions come forward, one after another, offering to teach relaxation, and I am glad to give them my blessing. After about a year of relaxing, their lives have already turned over. They no longer fall so easily into emotional tangles, and the old habits have largely been let go. The most crucial difference is that their vision is no longer trapped in surface appearances; they can see straight through to the deep, formless movement itself.

In the near future there will be regular relaxation gatherings in both Taipei and Kaohsiung. Together with Taichung and Hualien, that will make four cities in Taiwan where you can find Lifestream companions offering in-person relaxation.

In fact Lifestream's reach has already extended to Malaysia, where one companion is sharing the wonder of relaxation with people in her hometown. Working under a banner of art and relaxation, she has travelled across half the country, and is now preparing to set out on the next great journey, across the other half.

Lifestream's growth does not come from careful planning, but from the willingness of people who relax. I have never set any explicit goal for the association, nor even offered encouragement. I simply write every day, teach relaxation every week, and answer questions when someone raises a doubt. That is all.

If one day Lifestream reaches around the world and leads countless people into relaxation, the greatest credit will belong to these companions who were willing to step out among people.

With gratitude.
